The most popular city in Central Dalmatia is Zadar, whose walls are on the UNESCO World Heritage List and were built in the 12th and 13th centuries. In the 16th century, they were strengthened in order to defend Venice against Turkish attacks. Zadar can also boast a unique sea organ and a sphinx. Residents of Zadar rarely orient themselves by street names. Well-known localities are mostly used to explain the location, so it is not a problem for the people of Zadar to meet at the small post office, on Branimir and the like. If you ask any of the locals on the street, they will probably have to think twice. Maraschino, a well-known liqueur made from marasca cherries, comes from Zadar. The recipe was created in a Dominican monastery and was popular in many European courts. It is said that Napoleon and the passengers on the Titanic also enjoyed the liqueur.
The first electric light bulbs in the city were lit on New Year's Eve 1894, when 23 streets and 3 squares were illuminated. Zadar thus received lighting 13 years before Zagreb and only 12 years after New York.
The famous director Alfred Hitchcock commented that the sunset in Zadar is even more beautiful than the one in Key West, Florida.
However, Central Dalmatia is not only Zadar. You will find many beautiful resorts here. Bibinje is known for its readiness to celebrate all the time. The locals tell the truth at all costs and have raised several famous singers.
Sukošan is located in the Zlatna Luka bay. It is a town of agriculture, viticulture, olive growing, fruit growing and vegetable growing.
Petrčane is located in a bay and is mostly surrounded by a beautiful crystal sea, which is enjoyed by all visitors to this place. You will find many beaches here. From pebble, sand to concrete. The vast majority of them are located right next to pine forests, which provide natural shade and shelter from the sun.
The island of Ugljan is located opposite Zadar. These two places are only separated by a 25-minute ferry ride. The island hides beautiful wooded bays, hiking and cycling routes, stone fishing houses, as well as beautiful beaches. Nearby you can also find the island of Pašman, which is connected to Ugljan by the Ždrelac bridge. You can also visit the Telašćica Nature Park, or the salty medicinal and always warm lake Mir, as well as Stene, huge cliffs, up to 160 meters high.
